Why did you create this innovation?

GraphoGame was developed to combat illiteracy effecting over 1 billion people. Through evidence-based methods and trials, it offers an effective solution for learning literacy skills independently, empowering individuals globally. It’s efficacy, shown in randomised controlled trials, rivals 1-to-1 teacher support. It's a proven method for literacy, achievable in weeks without adult support.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

GraphoGame is a proven, affordable Android, iOS, and Windows literacy app. It teaches foundational reading and spelling skills: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, and blending. Children learn basic letters and sounds, advancing through levels to more complex words. The game adapts to each learner's ability, providing positive feedback to sustain engagement and ensure effective learning.

The app is free in many countries, but it also offers premium features for purchase. The value-added data services will be licensed to schools, cities, governments, and other educational organisations. Its data insights enable teachers to provide rightly-timed learner-centric support.

GraphoGame is committed to ending illiteracy by delivering free offline versions in multiple languages. This work will be done in close partnerships with governments, NGOs, foundations and CSR stakeholders with high, measurable impact.

How has it been spreading?

Today, GraphoGame is distributed as a paid app in 9 languages in the Google, Microsoft, and Apple application stores. Notably, it is available as a free literacy source funded by NGOs and governments already in 18 countries. Over 2,500 schools use GraphoGame and it has been downloaded over 7 million times.

GraphoGame's extensive language offering covers both prevalent and minority languages, enabling it to serve diverse populations worldwide. This language-based approach ensures adaptability and localisation, maximising relevance and effectiveness across different linguistic contexts for children and learners sharing a common language but residing in various geographic locations.

GraphoGame’s products include apps and data services available to learners, schools, cities and governments.
